ASSISTANT DIRECTOR

Helen W. Nyerges, a life-long naturalist, has taught informally on botanical knowledge since 1994 and has worked as a professional environmental educator since 1998.  As a crafts specialist, she has provided services in both the private and the public sector since 1983. She enjoys serving people of all ages and heritage.

For over 26 years, Helen has been involved in dozens of science and nature programs to connect people with nature, indigenous culture, primitive skills, local history, habitat conservation, green-living, and native plant gardening.  She has provided trainings and presentations for hundreds of staff and volunteers.  Helen has served as a director for nature preserves and non-profit foundations in Southern California since 2006.  During the prior nine years, she served as the animal care and nature educational program service staff for several parks and nature centers.

For over 36 years, Helen has conducted countless arts and crafts classes including old fashion traditional crafts of yesteryear.  Helen worked as a professional store designer, departmental manager, staff trainer, class developer, and craft fairs coordinator for a national arts and crafts chain.  She’s specialized in floral gifts and decors, zealous about rocks and mineral creative arts, and most passionate about recycled and upcycled crafts, which often are useful survival resources.

Since Helen has joined the School of Self-reliance family in 2012, she has been Christopher’s assistant in program development, public outreaches, and presentations for survival expos, community festivals, non-profit environmental educational groups, business groups, and private associations.  Helen was a recurring featured guest on the Weekly Report Show on PRN Preparedness Radio Network, and is a contributing author for American Survival Guide magazine.
