Description
Epazote (Dysphania ambrosioides, formerly Chenopodium ambrosioides) is an aromatic herb, native to central Mexico, which can be grown in most of North America. Sometimes called “nature’s Bean-O,” a bit of epazote adds a unique flavor to beans and other dishes. We’ve long used the fresh or dried leaves (and tender stems) in our soups and bean dishes, and we’ve also scattered branches of it in our chicken coop to help “de-worm” our chickens. In fact, we also regularly added some of the dried leaf into our dogs food to help keep them worm-free and gas-free.
Epazote is primarily regarded as a cooking spice, but you can see that it has other applications as well. In the wild, the plant grows in well-drained sandy soils, often along the banks of a river. It can grow in partial shade or full sun. Though the seeds seem to take a bit longer than other seeds to sprout, it’s a very hardy plant once it gets established.
We sell a package of the seed for $6, which includes the postage.
