ON LEARNING WILD FOODS
Have you ever attended a wild foods class, learning how to recognize the wild edibles, such as the classes that Christopher has been teaching for decades? If so, you are learning one of the most ancient skills.
I believe learning to identify edible plants and roots and berries and mushrooms to be arguably the oldest skill-set known to man!
What did we do when we left the cave? We had to eat, and we learned what was edible by what didn’t kill us. This hard-earned wisdom has never been lost, and has been handed down for thousands of years and perfected over time.
With agriculture and modern culture, it might appear that this is a lost art, or worse, a useless art by those who don’t see its value.
Thanks to men like Christopher who continues to perfect and pass along this skill set to his many students of all ages and all walks of life. This skill-set can be yours as well. But it is a lifetime learning process, not something you master over the weekend. Still, this will bring out your inner hunter gatherer.
This skill set is so old we cannot put an age to it. It’s yours to practice and marvel at what you are learning.
The art of learning about the uses of plants is as old as the so-called Stone Age, and before. We always had to eat, and the first thing we could eat was the plant that was right there at our feet!
Suggestions:
Today’s world offers us many ways to learn about wild plants. Try doing like I did –find someone near you and take classes in person! I found Christopher, but maybe you live in Michigan! Find someone there. Learn in person.
Yes, books and videos are ok too, but second-best. Christopher has many. Check them out.
