ANCIENT WRITINGS ON ROCK: Evidence for pre-Columbian European presence north of Los Angeles, eBook by Christopher Nyerges
On Hallowe’en Day, 2001, Christopher Nyerges was leading a group of 10 year old boys on a birthday walk along a stream, high up in the mountains of the Angeles National Forest. Taking a slight detour to go to the river to show the boys how to wash their hands with yucca, Nyerges noted a large 15 foot wide boulder with vertical engravings. He believed they resembled ogam, which seemed impossible because ogam was a writing system found primarily in Ireland, and its usage declined after the 5th century AD.
This book is Nyerges’ account of that find, how he learned that each mark was consistent with ogam, and his attempt to solicit aid from various linguistic and other experts. The book shows how Nyerges arrived at a tentative translation, and other speculations about who might have actually carved the rock.
After the initial discovery, one more rock with linguistic carvings was found, as well as several other features that are more consistent with a European ceremonial site.
A fascinating read, and Nyerges provides all the sources for his tentative conclusions so anyone could do the research on their own. Fully illustrated with photos and drawings. $4.99
